Hotels: The beachfront resorts and hotels in Isla Verde and Condado are distinguished for their lively casinos and top-notch service. While many of the hotels in and around these neighborhoods are high-end, there are also smaller inns which offer an affordable way to stay near the beach, as well as intimate condos and apartments. Back in Old San Juan, boutique hotels line the colonial streets and give easy access to many historical and cultural attractions.

Beaches: With lifeguards and relatively calm surf, Playa Escambón is a family favorite. Amenities include restrooms, outdoor showers, and nearby food. The coral reef not far from the shore makes this beach an excellent destination for snorkeling. Known for its diversity, Ocean Park Beach is great for beach parties and windsurfing. A variety of food and drink options are available, and in some locations they will bring your order straight to your beach chair. Though popular and lively, the beach is large enough to accommodate partiers and loungers alike.

Activities: Puerto Rico has many natural wonders, none quite as famous and spectacular as El Yunque National Forest. An hour drive from San Juan, discover the rare flora and fauna that make up the rainforest’s ecosystem. If you’re up for a hike, there are delightful panoramic views at the peak. However, you don’t need to go quite so far to get in touch with nature-- take a few hours to visit the botanical garden in San Juan and follow some of the tree-lined walking trails. For a more relaxing day, wet your whistle at the Bacardi Rum plant or the Don Q Rum factory. Spend some time learning how rum is made, and end your tour with a free beverage (or two). Later, take a walk down Fortaleza Street in Old San Juan for shopping and great restaurants.

Historical Sites: Characterized by its blend of modern storefronts and historical architecture, Old San Juan is a hot-spot for tourism. The free trolley makes it easy to navigate the cobblestone streets and visit the many historical sites and museums. Famous and picturesque, you will want to save plenty of time to visit the fortresses known as El Morro and Castillo de San Cristobal. On any given day, visitors can be found taking guided tours, exploring the casements, flying kites, or simply taking in the ocean view. Run by the National Parks Service, a $5 ticket grants access to both fortresses for a week, and children under 15 years old get free admission.
