Hotels: Whether you decide to stay at a luxurious resort or a simple guesthouse, you will find the best deals in the summer and fall. Upscale hotels are located on the north shore and have stunning ocean views. However, if you’re interested in an inexpensive stay with easy access to shopping and cultural sites, you may want to stay in one of downtown Christiansted’s many inns and B&B’s.
Activities: Located just off the northeast coast of St. Croix, Buck Island Reef National Monument contains a spectacular coral reef system, perfect for snorkeling and diving. If you charter a sailboat or take a snorkeling tour, it’s common to spot sea turtles and barracudas. Nearby is the unspoiled Turtle Beach, where you can swim, relax, and see even more sea life. There is also a hiking trail up to the observation deck, so be sure to pack some sturdy shoes. Another beach worth visiting is Sandy Point. Although it is only open on weekends from November to April, the rest of the year you can assist with turtle hatching season. A truly unique experience, volunteers spend their evenings helping to release the newly hatched turtles into the ocean. These volunteer opportunities fill up quickly, so book well ahead of time.
Historical Sites: With a long history of foreign occupation, St. Croix has many well preserved museums, exhibits and historical plantations which give a unique view into the island’s past. Explore the old sugar plantation and iconic windmill at the Estate Whim Museum, or get a feel for 20th century rural life at the nearby Lawaetz Family Museum. In Christiansted, you can learn all about early 19th century medicine at the Apothecary Hall Museum, which is free to the public.
Events: Lasting one week in April, the St. Croix Food and Wine Experience, the preeminent food and wine event in the Caribbean, has beckoned top chefs, winemakers, and avid foodies to the island since 2001. The festival events often sell out, but those who book early can find package deals through some hotels and villas. In October, visitors can join in the celebration of Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico Friendship Day. In conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month, this festival recognizes Puerto Ricans who have made meaningful contributions to the Virgin Islands.
